About Me
I’m Karen - born and bred in Hong Kong, but living in Singapore. When I was little, I always wanted to grow up to do something creative with my life - become a writer, an artist, a photographer, an explorer … so of course, I went and ended up becoming a Lawyer 🙈. Whilst I’m grateful for the security and opportunities that life as a lawyer has given me, I’ve always wanted to get back to who I was when I was younger - that person who loved to be creative, and didn’t want the typical 9-5 job. And part of that has developed into my desire to start my own business. I’ve been ummming and ahhhing over starting my own business for years. But I’ve always let imposter syndrome, fears and excuses get in the way. But after listening to several amazing podcasts and speaking to 3 inspiring women and friends who had the guts to take the chance and launch their own business, I decided to get off my ass and take the leap. I definitely felt like if I didn’t do it now, I’d never do it! This led to @sew.way.of.k
A couple of years ago I took a class on how to sew a dress. And I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed it! It felt like creating wearable art, where I could express myself and share it with my friends and family. I learnt how much effort and time it takes to make just one item. And it feels painful in this world of fast fashion to see how easily clothes get discarded and taken for granted - no one really thinking about the hours, effort and resources spent on making each piece. All of this led to me launching Sew Way of K.
I make each item myself, and do everything I can to minimise waste wherever possible during the production process. For the kids clothes, I always include elements that allow it to grow with your child so it can be worn for longer (elastic waistbands, adjustable straps, etc). And since the world can always do with more brightness - I only use fun, colourful and joyful fabrics!
